THE BIG SIX-ZERO -- A few months ago, a few of us got together and discussed the fact that next year most of us will turn 60.

At the same time, there was an article in the Eagle about a class that decided to have a "tweener" reunion. They had such wonderful time at their last reunion they decided that every 5 years to get together was too long.

Anyone interested in throwing ourselves a birthday party but on a much simpler scale? We really didn't get into specifics except for the necessity of a cake and candles.

If you have any suggestions or ideas, please contact me (BOINO475 @ aol.com) so we can set a date and get a place for the big 60.

Press Release:  The PHS Class of 1965 recently organized a memorial service and gathering to honor their late Class President F. Baxter Lane. The class is pleased to announce that in addition to providing an opportunity for over 100 local area classmates to pay their respects to the family of Mr. Lane, donations to the Class Scholarship account grew the fund by 12 percent and the account now stands at over $20,000.00.

Hi,

My name is Josh Cutler, and I am a recent graduate of Pittsfield High School.
In June, I was very very deeply honored to receive the F. Baxter Lane Memorial
Scholarship, created in honor of the Pittsfield High Class on 1965. I have
visited this message board many times, and truly recognize how deeply everyone
cared about Baxter, especially during the time when he truly needed his friends.
His contributions to the school and our local community will continue to be felt
with the creation of this scholarship, and I am deeply honored and privileged
to have received this award.

To respond to a previous inquiry, Roslind Cutler Kushner is my aunt, the sister
of my father, Dr. Alan Cutler, a graduate of the Class of 1970. I believe I am
also related to Lynne Cutler, but I can't say that I know her person to person.
I actually just returned home yesterday from visiting Roz and her family in
Eastern Massachusetts. They are all doing very well and send their best.

Best Wishes to All,

Josh Cutler

As I read the articles in the Berkshire Eagle detailing the graduation
celebrations of the Class of 2006 from Both Taconic and Pittsfield High, my eyes
welled up a bit when I read for the very first time, the scholarship award to
Joshua Cutler from the Pittsfield High Class of 1965, F. Baxter Lane Memorial
Scholarship. I wonder if there is a relationship to Lynne or Rosalind Cutler who
both graduated with the PHS Class of ’65.

I congratulate Joshua on being the 1st awardee and hope he goes on to much
success in his life and community.

Dear Jeanne, members of the committee, and all PHS class of 1965 members who attended the memorial and those who were unable to come,

I cannot find the appropriate words to describe the memorial held on May 20th. Baxter's favorite word was "extraordinary", so I will use that. The event was extra-ordinary (it could not be surpassed by any means) and a wonderful tribute to Baxter and all our classmates that have gone before us.

Thank-you to all who read prayers, special passages, and their own tributes to a dear friend. I am sure Baxter was watching and marveling at the never-ending spirit of the class of 1965--- he loved you all so much. Thank-you from the bottom of my heart.

Love, Kerry and family

P.S. --- The 911th Pittsburgh Air Reserve Base air show (which was initiated by Baxter) will be held July 8 and 9 from 9-5 at the airbase. The event is free and will feature the Navy stunt team. It has grown to be a huge event attended by 40- 50,000 during the 2 days. If you would like to come, contact Jerry Moynihan at (724) 327-2258. He can set you up at the Embassy Suites right across the highway from the base. They have an airport shuttle and you can walk to the airshow, so you do not need a rental car. I can probably get tickets to the VIP tent which means free food and drinks all day! All are welcome.

--- This note is for Rosemary DiMartino--- please thank your cousin Father Waitekus for presiding at the memorial service. With less priests these days and more duties to perform, I know they are stretched to the max. That was very special that he could lead the service. Not many people know this, but Baxter was an altar boy throughout his youth and even at UMass he was an active member of the Newman Club. It was his faith that helped him through his final days.

--- A final note to Carol Groat and the other singers, and to Wayne Collins for the beautiful music during the service.

Kerry and family and Aileen, our deepest sympathy for your great loss. Baxter
was one of the nicest, kindness and most generous people that we have ever
known. I have the print of Park Square in the living room that we got from
Gloria at the class reunion. It meant so much to us as Dave was the groudskeeper
there for years and planted the tulips and put many a Christmas tree up in the
freezing cold weather. Every time we look at it we will always think of Baxter
and how generous he was to present Gloria another print for her unsellfishness
in giving us her print that she won at the reunion. He will truly be missed by a
lot of people. He is a special angel that will always be in your hearts forever.
Love Dave and Millie

Kerry please accept my deepest sympathy to you and my wish for as much peace as
possible during this very difficult time. In a recent phone conversation with
Baxter, he credited you with being his strength. He was very upbeat in
describing his daily battle, but he also said that he was glad to have done some
things he valued very much since he was first diagnosed. He was pleased by the
success of the 40-year reunion and he was very pleased to have experienced
Hawaii with you by his side. He spoke with pride about Kelly, Brendan and Brian.
He also spoke fondly of the relationships that developed with Class of ’65
members….and he looked forward to a springtime visit with us. He truly loved his
Class Reunion Team. I will miss his visit.

I share the loss his family feels. Perhaps we can take some comfort in thinking
that God asked Baxter to join Him because there was special work for him to do.
Rest in peace my friend.

I have been reminiscing all day about Baxter and wonderful memories came
flooding back. Some 50 years have transpired since I first met Baxter and it has
been a joy and an honor to know both he and Kerry. From our days working at the
Big N, the "Presidential" campaign, working at the Country Club of Pittsfield,
visiting UMass, his business trips to Chicago, visiting his family in Buffalo
with my own on the way back to Pittsfield, and on and on. It is with a heartfelt
sadness that he is gone, but his spirit, integrity, good cheer and positive
attitude will never be forgotten, certainly not by the Class of 65. Not once
during his illness did I ever here him complain about his circumstances.

Kerry, you have our deepest sympathy and prayers.

Dear Class of 1965,

It is with great regret that I send this message today. Baxter passed away this morning after a long journey of incredible determination to overcome his battle. Kerry has been an inspiration to him and to all of us for her courageous role as her husband traveled this roller coast life this past year.

Every once in awhile, someone comes into our lives that just makes us feel a little happier, a little more secure in the decisions we make and more confident that we can meet challenges presented to us. Baxter was that someone to many of us.

For those of you who live out of town, you probably know that Baxter always played a huge role in our reunions and anything related to our class in non-reunion years. Regardless of where he and Kerry were living in the country, Baxter ALWAYS attended a few meetings and always kept in touch with the committee. The votes we cast for him in 1964 were the smartest votes we ever made.

In the Spirit of 65, I am sad but inspired by a man who showed such faith and will-power to travel such a road with such dignity. He is in good hands.

I would like to share some wonderful and exciting news. From August 12-27, I
will be participating in a trip to Sri Lanka through Habitat for Humanity
International's Global Village program. My team of nearly 20 people will be
working to rebuild homes destroyed by the devastating tsunami. We'll be
traveling to the town of Batticaloa on the east coast of Sri Lanka, one of the areas
hardest hit.

When I learned that there was a group going from Washington, I knew that I
wanted to be there, as a concerned individual, as a member of my community and
also as a representative of a caring and pro-active America. This will be an
opportunity to experience first-hand the effects of the tsunami and to offer
hands-on help to those who have lost everything. I want to have a dialogue with
the people that I meet and then bring these stories and insights back to you.

Our goal is to be able to provide help without any cost to our hosts or those
affected by the disaster. In order to do this, each person will be paying
approximately $3000 to cover all expenses. I am reaching out and seeking your
support to raise this amount. This donation is tax-deductible and you will
receive a receipt from Habitat for Humanity International. So that my team gets
credited with your contribution, you will need to provide my Habitat for
Humanity ID #6562-4161 and the GV event code #GV5370 with your contribution.

To donate on-line and to learn more about my trip with Habitat for Humanity
visit www.habitat.org/gv/mytrip/6562-4161. To see the exact work site where
we'll be working, you can visit the website created by the professional relief
team that went before volunteers were permitted: www.rebuildbatti.com.

You can donate using a credit card by calling Habitat for Humanity
International's Global Village department at 1-800-422-4828, Ext. 2549. If you
prefer to write a check, please make it payable to "Habitat for Humanity
International" and send it to me -- I'll send the checks to them. Make sure to

The logistics for feeding a class our size are complicated to plan for and difficult to pull off. Food is the most significant portion of the expenses involved in a reunion. Other expenses include, but are not limited to, stationery, postage, and music. We asked for feedback from folks who visited our webpage. The majority of the comments we received from classmates who attended previous reunions favored the "waitress passed" and "stationed" hors d'oeuvre and the greater opportunities for mingling, rather than a sit-down dinner and limited chances to mix. Positive experiences from a similar event we held at the ITAM were numerous. Using past budgets as a guideline, the items selected by the reunion committee are listed on the Reunion Page. Please use our post-a-message web page and send us any additional comments or suggestions that you may

Thank you Jeanne for being the force of continuity for us. I am just
re-discovering this site and the posts of people I know and wondering about the
lives of wonderful classmates who have not posted. May I ask that each of you
reading this somehow just jump in here and tell us where you are and what you
are doing. I know there is a mixture of humility and "look what I have
accomplished" associated with these kind of forums...please get over both and
just connect!

For me - my entire career has been in information systems, I am on a wonderful
second marriage, have a son and daughter in their 20's, have attacked thrill
sports with a vengence, been to Burning Man (again next year), and am a peace
marcher (dispite the fact that I graduated from the Air Force Academy). I love
living in CA; if it was not for the high cost of living, all the people and
traffic...it would be absolutely perfect! My jobs, many over several years,
have been very rewarding and enabled significant international travel. A
highlight was living in Germany for four years.

I note the posts from Jonathan Mahanna, my ski buddy at Bousquet's. He was
always a better skier than I was and I learned a lot from him. This is my 51st
year of skiing and I only missed one year due to a soccer injury. When people
ask, I tell them "I was very lucky to grow up in Pittsfield where 3 ski areas
were incredibly close. Either you were a hockey player or a skier in the
winter. I was a skier. My two kids are snowboarders!"

Soooo there you have it. Please share. I am all over e-mail so if you want to
connect...here I am:

Hi Class of 65,

Apparently the last "mass" email I sent introduced many of you to this web site for the first time. I received many emails the past few weeks and sounds like 65'ers are reconnecting with each other. It also generated new email addresses and we are now up to over 200 and still have 500+ to go. Resources for the email addresses are the email directory on this site, lists from 1990-2000 and responses from you. If you live in Pittsfield, and have been to the Mall or Stop and Shop, you may have been approached by a fellow 65'er for your email. I have talked to some who don't have access to cyberspace and I'm sure there are many others. I've been to multiple web sites for email addresses with little success. Classmates.com, where I found Jim nagle, is the best so far. Does anyone have any suggestions for another email resource for finding 'current" addresses? Many addresses from 2000 have servers that don't exist and that affects quite a few addresses, eg.: erols.com, spirit.com, gateway.com, vabch.com.

This is just part one!! The next project will be updating home addresses for those without email. Again, new ideas are always welcome and we would love to see some new faces at the meetings. Over the years, we always hear complaints about the cost and the menu. Pittsfield has only a few places that can hold us so we are limited to what we can do. The "new" Berkshire Hills Country Club is ideal for a large group and they offer a flexible menu. Please keep in mind that the cost of tickets includes the music, the food, postage ($500 per year) for this year and for 2010 (ouch, that's scary to think about), and deposits to confirm reservations for the next reunion. We are meeting in a few weeks and would appreciate any comments or suggestions. Please share any email or home addresses you have for fellow 65'ers. Most importantly, check out this site for updates.

From: PHS Class of '65 Reunion Committee

The reunion committee met last Tuesday night and among the items discussed were efforts to minimize expenses for our 40th Reunion on August 6, 2005.

Jeanne Butler Boino is leading one effort by attempting to get as many email addresses as possible to save on USPS postage. If you're not receiving email from Jeanne, please use our post-a-message web page and send us your email address.

Pat Ricchi is heading up a committee to create a memory book for the reunion. The committee is planning to sell quarter page, half page and full page adds for the book. If you'd like to place an ad in the book, please let us know, we'll get back to you.

We have secured the Berkshire Hills Country Club for the reunion. After paying other miscellaneous expenses our balance in our checking account is now $635.00.

The committee is working very hard to make this reunion the best yet. We would appreciate any suggestions you wish to share

PRESS RELEASE

John Callan, a Pittsfield native, who works as a civil engineer in Chicago, was named 2004 Citizen of the Year in Darien, IL, according to several of his Pittsfield High classmates who received invitations to the March 6, 2004 event from the Darien mayor. Class of 1965 president, F. Baxter Lane and Attorney James Martin represented the class of 1965, and presented a plaque on its behalf to Callan.

Mr. Callan moved to Darien in 1977 and, through his service on its Plan Commission, was involved in much of the city's construction. He and his wife Kathleen started a homeowners association in their own subdivision. He served as an Alderman from 1989-90, then again from 1993 to 1997. Mr. Callan also became involved in local sports and served on the board of the Hinsdale South Boosters Club for three years. Later he became a member of the Darien Historical Board.

Family members in attendance were his wife of 30 years, Kathleen, his three sons, Michael, 23, Joseph, 20, and James, 18, and his brother Robert Callan and family, presently residing in Atlanta.
John Callan grew up in the Backman Avenue neighborhood and lived in Pittsfield through his high school years, graduating in 1965. Later, he graduated with an engineering degree from Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute, now UMASS Dartmouth, in 1969. He has been in the Chicago area ever since. His parents, both Pittsfield natives, are now deceased.

Hello to all my PHS friends/classmates...

This is a very difficult letter to write to you. I'm not even sure I know how to begin. So, let me start from the very beginning...

A little over three years ago, I had a kidney transplant. The kidney I received from my Godson/Godsend nephew was not a good match, but, we had to use that kidney, or I wouldn't be here writing this now. The transplant, at that time was a matter of life or death for me. Jason gave me three years more than we had expected. :) :)

Well, this past week, I found out, that the kidney is at, or very near failure...again. Very soon, I will need a new kidney, or I will be in the same predicament I was in 3 years ago...life or death. My Drs are not sure if they can dialize me any more or not, because, my veins are so bad from the diabetes. Everything they put in me (grafts, shunts, etc.), becomes infected. During my last bout with dialysis, I went through 55+ surgeries, to hold me until I could receive a kidney. This will not be the case this time. :(

I don't think we have the time to wait for a donor list recipient. I know most of us don't know one another very well, but, I am going to ask a favor of each of you....one I have never ever asked of anyone in my entire life.

I am asking if any of you would be willing to be tested to become a donor for me? Gawd!!! You have no idea how difficult this is for me!!!

My insurance will pay for any tests, and the surgery. I am A+, which is a universal blood type. The people willing to be tested must be in good health...a.e., no heart problems, cancer, diabetes, etc.

There will be a lot of testing to be done....blood work, possibly a heart catheter, and the surgery is rather minimal, and would require maybe 4 days stay in the hospital, and at least 2 weeks out of work, depending on the job, and the person.

If anyone is willing to be tested, they can e-mail me at vm10250@aol.com. I will then give more info. I have run out of family members, except one neice...other than that, I have no idea where else to turn for help, except the donor list, and that may not be in time.

I am Thanking each of you in advance for reading this.

May God Bless you all!! Vicki Juliano Mathes
