Western Massachusetts championships in track and golf highlighted the 1964 sports year at Pittsfield High. The school also won county titles in baseball and skiing. The basketball team triumphed in the Northern Berkshire League race, but lost a three-game county playoff series to Lee High's Southern Berkshire League titlists.
Coach Renedetti was the most successful of the P.H.S. mentors. He directed the track team to its first Western Massachusetts crown in 10 years, and again guided the ski team to its fourth Berkshire Hills title. Ah a sophomore, Charley Goodrich was the skimeister as Pittsfield maintained dominance in the annual meet at Pittsfield State Forest.
This year was the biggest in the school's athletic history, with the hockey team playing its most ambitious schedule and soccer raised to varsity status. The P.H.S. puck representatives, forced to compete against teams that were far more seasoned, made a respectable showing with a record of 5 wins, 13 losses, and 1 tie. At the year's end, the team, under the direction of Coach Blowe, was competing in an organized league for the first time. P.H.S. was admitted to the Western Massachusetts League.
The soccer team, in its first year with Coach Gionet as coach, had only one win and six losses. However, three of the setbacks were by one goal, and one of those matches went into over time. Rated the best members of the squad were fullback John Lovejoy, outside left John Unwin, and inside right Dave Farrar, all seniors.
Pittsfield's basketball team won a tight race in the NRL. However, Coach Frank Moynihan's club lost games at Lee in the county series, and a Southern Berkshire team took the Berkshire title for the first time in 11 years. The last SBL winner also was Lee, after defeating Pittsfield in 1953.
The track team achieved another major feat by going undefeated in its dual meets. Senior Art Delusky was the outstanding competitor, winning the Massachusetts Discus Championship and placing third in the New England tournament.
The golf team, led by Jerry and Pat Moynihan, gave out-going Coach Fox, a splendid present by winning the Western Massachusetts Championship. Coach Fox retired at the end of the school year after a coaching career that started here in 1946. P.H.S. almost made it two state titles for Fox in three years, but lost by a thin margin in the finali. Coach Fox called the 1964 team his greatest!
In baseball, Pittsfield with Coach Pellerin directing for the first time, edged Drury High of North Adams in a one-game playoff at Adams for the NBL title, then beat Lenox for the county crown. However, it lost in its first or semi-final contest in the Western Massachusetts tournament.
Pittsfield's football team won statewide acclaim by defeating Eastern powers New Redford and Brockton under Coach Gleason. After winning its first six games, P.H.S. had a disappointing last three games.
We hope that this year, 1965, will bring added success to the various teams at P.H.S.!
