Baleen Whales

Baleen whales are different from toothed whales because instead of teeth, they have baleen, a proteinous subtance, which they use to siphon out small arthropods and fish. Because these whales are usually very large, they need a lot of these animals to fill their diet; therefore, they usually spend a lot of time feeding. The following are some pictures of some baleen whales:

A Right Whale breeching (this is a characteristic leap out of the water onto the whale's side that many whales perform. It is unknown why they do it).

A Finback whale--the second largest of all the whales. This picture was taken by me when I was on a whale watch July, 1993.

A Gray Whale

A Sperm Whale

Humpback Whales--these whales were once highly endangered, but now their numbers are not as low as they once were.
