A Visit to the

Delmar Fire Department

Here's some sights and sounds from the visit by our computer campers during our
Spring Break 1999 Cyber Haus Computer Camp.

After we arrived at the Fire Department, Greg, a volunteer fireman and soon-to-be firechief, talked to us about fire safety. We learned that if there is a fire and we are upstairs, we should close our door, open the window and wait for the firemen to come.

He also told us that the size of a fire doubles every minute. So you don't have much time to get out of a burning house.

Fire needs air so that it can burn. So a fire burns up and out.
If you're in a room that's on fire, you should crawl on the floor.

After the talk, the firemen showed us the fire trucks. This truck pumps water to a fire. It has lots of hoses, hardware to break into a house on fire and things to clean up.
This truck is a ladder truck. They use it to get to people who are trapped upstairs on higher floors. They can also it to spray water down on a fire.

After they showed us the fire trucks, we got to go on a short ride on one of the trucks. The truck was very noisy! The seats were very small and had places to rest equipment on. There was room for six firemen in the back compartment where we rode. There was room for two up front.

When we returned back to the fire station, the fireman driving the truck checked the siren.

After the ride, some of us got to try on fire gear. The gear weighed 70 pounds. When Zach was fully dressed, he almost tipped over (Zach only weighs 60 pounds).

Thea got to try on an oxygen mask. The mask only put out air when you breathed in.
It was very tight and it made Thea light-headed.

(Luke, I am your father!)

This is the old fire truck. It is only used for parades and funerals. Everything on it still works.

Thanks guys for a great visit!
