A Visit the Watervliet Arsenal

The Arsenal is the oldest, continuously active arsenal in the United States. Founded in 1813 to support the War of 1812, the arsenal has been a valuable resource ever since -- including a  major role in the 1991 Gulf War.

Here's some sights from the visit to the Arsenal Museum by our computer campers during our First (August 2000) Cyber Haus Computer Summer Camp. The museum is open to the public, Monday-Thursday, 10am-3pm.

From left to right, 8 inch, 12 inch and 16 inch guns.

The guns are located in front of the museum and can be seen from Interstate 787 near Troy, NY

Looking through the 16 inch gun. Can you see Scott at the other end?

Barrack's Bell

British 24 Pounder, George II

This is one of two guns that were surrendered by the British at the Battle of Saratoga, the turning point of the American Revolution.

This is a model cannon from the USS Kearsarge. Part of the ship is also modeled.

Another model cannon.

This is a display of Japanese rifles and machine guns from World War II.

This is a French Cannon. Eric is behind the cannon trying to figure out how to fire it.

This was a confederate secret weapon. It fired 65 rounds per minute. Each round was a one inch ball. If the confederates had had this weapon earlier in the war, the outcome might have been different.

This is the famous bazooka. It is essentially a rocket launcher, but it's actually a recoilless rifle.

This is a lathe used to make gun barrels.

Behind the scenes in the back room, you will find this psychedelic, funky, groovy refrigerator. It's really used to test spray paint.

Looking down from the stairway (where it is 30 degrees warmer -- the museum is not air conditioned), you can see the main entrance of the museum. Ray is standing near the entrance in front of George II.

This tank is outside the museum next to the Naval guns.

At the Arsenal, instead of a light on a post, there's a cannonball.

On our way back to Cyber Haus, we passed the famous Ted's Fish Fry, a local favorite.
